Illegal dumping of Contaminated Soil/Waste

Illegal dumping of Contaminated Soil or Waste – The very serious criminal offence

What is illegal dumping?

“Illegal dumping is the placement of waste onto private or public land where no license or approval exists to accept such waste. It varies from small bags of rubbish in an urban environment to larger scale dumping of materials in isolated areas, such as bushland.” (http://www.illegaldumping.com.au/)

Did you know?

Governments and local councils across Australia are continually cracking down and reinforcing their legislation on illegal dumping. For example, if found guilty offenders can be issued an on the spot fine of up to $5000. The seriousness of illegally dumping asbestos waste is demonstrated in the example below (see link); where a NSW man was fined $36000 by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for dumping asbestos waste on a property near Gosford. In reaction to the verdict a representative of EPA declared, “This ruling sends a strong message to the community that illegal operators will be caught and will be held to account for their actions.”

Similarly, a serial offender was fined $225,000 for illegally dumping asbestos waste:

Don’t take the risk

On top of heavy fines there is the very real possibility of imprisonment for illegal dumping. This is because of the potential dangers to individuals health as well as the impact on the environment for humans and wildlife alike, for example, pollution of water systems.

Be aware; find out where you local waste disposal facility is and dispose of any hazardous materials correctly. The risks of being caught really aren’t worth saving a few quick bucks. Don’t do the crime and don’t do the time!

We’re all responsible for the environment so follow the law and do your bit to protect it today.
